Detox, rehab keep few meth users clean long term: Many methamphetamine users who joined a residential rehabilitation program to quit their drug use succeeded initially - but after three years, all but a few had gone back to using, according to a new study from Australia. Shorter detoxification treatments had even less impact on getting meth users clean, researchers found. Richard Rawson of the University of California, Los Angeles Integrated Substance Abuse Programs said the problem with many treatment programs is they end too soon.

Long Term
"Rawson said for drug addiction treatments to be sustainable, they have to continue over a longer time - but it's unclear whether that means months or years.
"Some people really have trouble grasping the fact that they need help for a longer period of time. They want to go into rehab, get fixed, and go on with their life," he said."

Residential rehab in Australia,
as far as I know, is not generally 12 Step based. AA volunteers request access to preach AA to residents and I know of some meetings in my area where the rehab people are transported to a meeting, then back to rehab. (They didn't look too pleased to be there.) We don't have the level of coercion that you do in Northern America. Interesting article.
Brett probably knows more about this.

12 step down under
I can only find 2 rehabs in oz that do not follow any 12 step type of program or include it in the treatment(residential rehab TC's) I have been looking for over a year now.
