Getzville Dr. James Corasanti of New York was acquitted in the hit and run death of Alexandria Rice, but he still faces a DUI conviction and medical license restrictions. On July 8, 2011 Dr. Corasanti was driving his BMW which struck and killed 19 year old Alexandria Rice on her way home from work at a local pizza place. Corasanti was returning from playing golf and socializing at the Transit Valley Country Club. With one prior DUI 16 years ago and allegations that he was drunk and texting during the accident he was acquitted of manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter. The DUI charge still stands and has been adjudicated guilty by Erie County Court Judge Sheila DiTullio who at one time had to clear the courtroom because a defense witness and prosecuting attorney lost their tempers.
Dr. Corasanti faces sentencing for the DUI on Aug. 16 and faces a maximum of 1 year in jail. The New York State Board for Professional Medical Misconduct has fined the doctor $10,000 and put him on probation for 5 years where he can't practice medicine unless under the supervision of another doctor and must attend self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
