The Promises

Some people say that AA does not claim to work for everybody and deals only with alcohol (as opposed to other problems). I hereby present "The Promises":

“If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through.  We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.  We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.  We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.  No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.  That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.  We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away.  Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.  Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.  We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.  We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us — sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.”

"They will always materialize if we work for them.”

AA is a religious cult dressed up to look like a treatment for alcoholism.

"How many AA'ers are enjoying a "new happiness" and a "new freedom"

Discounting my initial two years in the cult when I was scared to leave (yes I bought it...jails institutions and death) whenever I returned (when things got real bad) over a period of 30 years the most of that shit I could stomach was about 3 meetings on the trot before I disappeared again.........New happiness and new freedom? Fuck me ha! ha! ha!

There was one old timer, Rita who always used to say "I'm glad I'm an alcoholic....where else could I get all this" I know its a common stepper statement and they all say it, but I used to think.....all what for fucks sake? dunkalogues and a lifetime of meetings and slogans...........no after my initial break from the fear mongering BS whenever I returned it was about 2 or 3 meetings then gone for another 5 to 6 six years. The last meeting I attended, I walked out mid meeting, I couldn't honestly stand anymore of the crap........AA, it’s a fucking madhouse

......and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Matthew 24:11

Your word choice is one factor which sets you apart from any group that is "happy" and/or "free", NoAAUK.

The funny thing is that all the unemployed, caffeine addicted, skirt chasing, nicotine smoking AA gurus will tell you all day long how the promises have come true for them.
See how wonderful life can be if you have a 'Higher Power"?
Where I live, at the end of the meeting someone would read the promises, and after they read "...if we work for them", all the unemployed bums would chant "work, work, work".

It works if you work it, the promises come true if you say they come true. DOPES!!!

"You'll pay to know what you really think". - J.R. Bob Dobbs

becket's picture

If that is the world they aspired to, and they achieved living the way they wanted to, then the promises did, in fact, come true for them. You are judging them by your own yardstick. Happiness is not measured by someone else's criteria - we measure our own happiness ourselves.

"You are judging them by your own yardstick."

No he's judging them by what would be considered the 'normal' yardstick. But you are right becket, if you just want to sit around in a cult spouting the same nonsensical cult BS over and over again, year in year out then the promises will in fact come true for you.

Similaly if you aspire to be a Control Freak or a Sexual Predator then where better to be than AA?

If you desire to be an Unemployable, chain smoking, coffee slurping Spiritual Guru possessing special insight into a God given message, who is to be viewed in awe by lesser spritual beings who have not been in the cult as long, then again the AA promises may come true for you.....provided you don't let anyone else know if you relapse, or if you ARE still drinking , you can keep it a secret from the cult

......and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Matthew 24:11

becket's picture

There is no "normal". It is just as much a fabrication as penis enlargement.

I agree, Dorak, and I think that the people it works for are people who were simply overindulging. You know, the people without real mental illness or trauma or unending pain. Some people join AA just to belong to something. They call themselves "high-bottom." For example, an "alcoholic" that can get drunk off six beers.

Clara's picture

Well, Ironic, since you want to bring it up, how about you and the three drinks that can get you drunk? Everyone is different.

This reminds me of meetings here people try to suggest that they are a worse drunk than someone else.

But Ironic isn't claiming to be an alcoholic, so that's irrelevant.

Oh, gee. You mean someone that can't handle her booze is in a position to judge another that can't handle her booze? That's rich.

Besides, if anyone had bothered to read the post, they would know that I wasn't referencing my previous drinking. 6 beers to me NOW would be a binge.

Remember Christopher Stevens when you vote.

Ironic's picture

It's not rich. I can only have three beers, but I don't run around calling myself an alcoholic.

C&E understands the difference, so apparently you're the only one confused, Clara.

When did you say that six beers was a binge for you NOW and not then? You said nothing of the sort until everyone laughed at you.

Clara's picture

Well, there are plenty that feel addicts and alcoholics are about the same, so what the heck!

Besides, as you have gleaned for yourself, it isn't the amount... it's what it does to you.

Remember Christopher Stevens when you vote.

Clara's picture

That's is exactly how I said it, Ironic. I said it in the present tense, not past tense. I guess if someone's reading skills were so poor that they couldn't see that... I also said it AGAIN to no avail.

Remember Christopher Stevens when you vote.

causeandeffect's picture

Ironic, she said nothing of the sort until LONG after everyone laughed her. It was the same thing with her crap bisque; she never said it had been 2 years since she's had the soup until long after everyone laughed at her.

Apparently she can't lie in real time, she has to lie retrospectively.

Why would it be necessary to qualify a food? If I could find it on a menu tomorrow, I would have it if I wanted it. Just because you were trying to goose me on it and it didn't fly, but what difference would it make if it was a years old incident or last week? No one asked me when it was.

And it didn't matter. People still reference it.

You're a really crappy person Becket. Talking about resting on my mommy's insurance while you drank away your working years and are resting fat and lazily on social security?

I'm just glad you'll probably be dead soon, you old nasty piece of shit.

Clara's picture

If I may interject... Most adult fulltime students can be on parental medical insurance. And I would love to tell a smart young person to spend your income frugally during the time before you have a spouse and children, if those are in your plans. It will be the one time in your life with the least need for expendable income that you can either invest or spend. CHOOSE TO INVEST IT. There is no resting "fat and lazily" on social security.

And yes, there is such a thing as resting fat and lazy on social security, if you didn't pay in your fair share. I've been working and paying taxes for seven or eight years.

Clara's picture

That's right... but GRADUATE school is right there waiting for you!

So what. You can be. My friend works for Coach and they have partner benefits. Another friend's benefits include anyone she is supporting on her taxes can be part of her family med plan. It could be her mother. Good for you.

And never use it, just join the cult of Alcoholics Anonymous and prowl the internet for people to stalk like Clara did in Pennsylvania. What a waste of money getting a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice and never even using it. Of course given Clara and her lack of knowledge of the Criminal Justice System it is very doubtful that she ever went farther than a few college courses because even an Associated Degree graduate would know more than her on the subject.

That's the ticket, just go Alcoholics Anonymous and get taught by the criminals from jails and prison how to lie and just say you have a Masters Degree.

It was a shame, but when I went to DC, there was a hiring freeze. I got into sales and enver looked back. Besides, despite everthing I was doing to deserv going to jail, the only opps that were open were with the Bureau of Prisons, and my father just couldn't wrap his head around the possibility that it could include working in an actual facility verses a desk job at the Bureau. I would be the first to tell you that I didn't have much passion for the field, and I was rather relieved not to be in it.

I've never had anything to do with PA other than to ride through it on the was to Canada, JR.

JR Harris's picture

I think you are being a little untruthful in your Criminal justice background Clara. Exactly what section of the Criminal justice program had a hiring freeze? Are you sure that you didn't just find a husband in the medical field that you could leech off of who allows you to troll the Internet all day long in search of people to stalk like you did in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with that couple going through a nasty divorce as cribbisque?. (By the way, most people with any college at all would know that Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania!)

Sure, it is, but that doesn't mean I've been there. I surely would defend Allison against that goober any day of the week. Remember that the woman in question that assailed me for condeming her behavior against a newcomer when she had 18 years in the fellowship is from Canton, OH.

There was a federal hiring freeze. I wanted to work for the Justice Department or the State Department. I ended up working in a Williams Sonoma shop in G'town. I did meet a young Eric Holder when he was getting his RX-7 serviced. He asked me out, something my husband hates.
